Melbourne’s beloved Mexican eatery, Fonda, lands in Bondi

I know I’m not the only one who chooses my dining destinations based on their interiors. So I am more than a tad excited to see the new Sydney opening of Melbourne foodie icon, Fonda.

With pastel pops, like millennial pink plates and walls, a sky blue shop front and loads of terracotta-toned accents, it’s not only the food that we’ll be heading back to this Bondi eatery for.

Owners David Youl and Tim McDonald have an impressive track record: six years and seven Melbourne venues under their belt. It was only a matter of time before they sank their teeth into the Sydney market.

‘Casual’, ‘bright’ and ‘bustling’ are three words that Fonda’s seven destinations here in Melbourne have become known for – and the Sydney incarnation is all that and more. In fact, it’s setting the scene for a rejig of the Melbourne Fondas becoming a little more ‘refined’.

In Bondi, there’s table service (a Fonda first), a fresh take on the food (think taco sharing boards!), new signature cocktails and, most excitingly (for my sweet tooth cravings, anyway!) dessert is now on the menu.

Architect and interiors studio Studio Esteta (who are also behind one of my other favourite eateries, Workshop Bros Glen Waverley) are the brains behind the fit out, harnessing inspiration from the local neighbourhood. The result is a space that is quintessentially ‘Bondi’, with a Mexicana twist.

You’ll find this colourful beauty at 85 Hall St, Bondi Beach and online here.
